The Deadline of linking of Aadhaar-PAN extended to 31st March 2020

The deadline for linking the Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar has been extended till 31st March 2020 by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) by means of an order.

CBDT had issued a statement in which it stated that the due date for linking of PAN with Aadhaar as mentioned under sub-section 2 of Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 was extended from 31st December 2019 to 31st March 2020.

Previously, the deadline for linking Aadhar and PAN was 31st December 2019.

This is the 8th time that the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had extended the deadline for individuals in the direction of linking their PAN with Aadhaar.

Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act states that every individual who has PAN as on 1st July 2017 and is eligible to get Aadhaar, should intimate his Aadhaar number to tax authorities.

Aadhaar has been issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) towards a resident of India and PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number which is allotted by the I-T Department to an individual, firm or entity.

Last year, the Supreme Court had made a statement that the flagship Aadhaar scheme of the Centre is constitutionally valid as well as said that the biometric ID shall remain compulsory for the filing of Income Tax returns and allotment of PAN.
